The question that has to be number one on my list over the years would be from women concerning weight training and their desire not to get “big or bulky” this is usually accented with a finger pointed at me with the woman saying, “like you”. Or she is pointing to a female bodybuilder in a magazine saying “like that.”
Q. Being a woman in mid-thirties I want to start working out but I don’t want to be bulky like the guy from terminator. I understand that if I workout with free weights I will get bulky but if I work out on machines I won’t. Is that true?
A. No. Let me say that emphatically that it takes a tremendous amount of work to achieve the “bulky” look like Arnold Scwheneggar had in the terminator or any top level bodybuilder, don’t worry it is not something that just happens because you start working out. One can achieve increased muscle mass or “bulky” working with free weights or machines, but remember the amount of time and work it takes is years and many hours of focused training. However, for your goal of just starting to workout what I suggest is that you start 3 days per week 1 hour per workout. This will include 15 minutes of cardiovascular activity and 45 minutes of resistant training, which can be performed on machines, or using free weights this will not give you a “bulky” look. I suggest you use weights that you can handle and perform 2-3 sets per exercise and 15-18 repetitions per set. I start beginners with high repetitions because it helps them keep correct form while doing the movements over and over.
