As Appeared in the Happy Times

Friday, September 8th, 2006
                                                                  September 06

                                                 Happy Times/Happy Herald

September is a very important time of the fitness year for a lot of people. You see this is what I call the “Corridor of Challenges” meaning from Labor Day through Christmas. People stop training on a consistent basis for a plethora of reasons.

Labor Day sets the tone for taking a break in the routine and then before you know it Halloween is here with all the candy, treats and more excuses not to continue your exercise routine.

The big year-end holidays kick in the day after Halloween and the games begin. Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of course, you guessed it that is when the major excuses come out on why people cannot find time to exercise on a regular basis and pull out the Ol’ “I’ll start the first of the year!”

Understanding that everyone is busy I suggest to my clientele to reduce their frequency and time. For example instead of working out 3 times a week for 1 hour each workout, try twice a week for 45 minutes each workout.

By keeping the habit of regulating some time during their busy week to exercise during the busiest time of the year they can always find time to stick to the commitment they made to live the healthy lifestyle.

Now you are in the “Corridor of Challenges”. I want you to stay focused on your fitness goals and don’t give up on your commitment to yourself and if you have questions about your fitness program or exercises please contact me.

Happy August Everyone!

“Another Day another Muscle”

Firstly, I wanted everyone to know I have started writing for the Happy Times a small free publication distrubuted throughout Broward County. Watching or reading the news daily will probably depress you, so it’s nice to throw in a little mix of news that is positive, cheerful and well Happy! I will be writing the fitness column there starting in September so let your friends know and pick up a copy when you can.

Well some people are complaining about the heat and of course you know the weather is always a minor obstacle as you have no doubt heard me say many times during class. “Some like it Hot.”

Well so everyone knows the alibootcamp.com website is up and running. Look for the photo gallery to be added soon where you can go and find yourself taking class when you were probably in the best shape of your life, provided you were consistent of course. More and more content  is being added everyday.  Which leads me to inform you that I buildling the Bootcamp Business Directory now.

The businesses/professionals listed have agreed to give anyone from the website a discount on their perspective service or business.

Bootcamp will start its Resturant Promotion Parties starting after Labor Day. That is where approximately twice per month you will recieve an invitation e-mail to the Restuarant chosen for you and up to five(5) other people to come enjoy the restuarant and the group for a unique night, (especially after K.C. starts drinking), anyway just R.S.V.P. with Yes or Maybe so we have an estimate of seating. In addition to all that fun every restaurant we visit has agreed to give 10-15% off everyone’s check. “A penny saved is a penny earned.” B. Franklin

As the Bootcamp Business Directory comes online we will then embark on Promotional Events at the different establishments and/or services. Some of the businesses do not leand themselves to promtional events but as any good marine would do we will improvise.

Class schedules are the same presently but keep in mind there will be no class Saturday August 12, 2006. Out of town. Class picks up Monday August 14th, 2006.

Yours in Health,
Ali

Article: Cahoots Quarterly Aug.2001

Friday, July 28th, 2006

I wrote this article for Free Beach Publication Cahoots Quarterly in 2001, however a good part of it is very relavant as you can see.
Cahoots, Aug 2001

Summer is in full swing and people everywhere are enjoying the hot Florida sun with all of its humidity. I have found that people either love it or hate it. There is usually no middle ground; personally I find it to be a little warm most of the time. That should probably give you an indication as to where I stand on heat issue. Just in case you are not sure, I LOVE THE HEAT!

That is why I live in South Florida; I get to ride my motorcycle almost year round except for those couple weeks in mid February where my blood has thinned too much to take the cold. I say cold as if it gets down to 10 degrees however, most people that have been in South Florida for more than 5 years know that below 60 degrees is brrrr-cold.

Now that summertime is winding down this is the time to get your nutrition in line for the dreaded September-December corridor, during those months’ time flies by in the form of holidays. Now the stores start decorating earlier and earlier for their major holiday Christmas as soon as Labor Day is over, soon I predict that after the 4th of July they will just skip the rest of the holidays and induce us to start shopping for Christmas.

Because we live in such diverse community it seems like everyone celebrates everything whether or not it applies to them on a personal level or not. Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanzaa, Navidad, Noel, and of course Festivus for the rest of us and New Years. I celebrate all of these occasions because my life includes all of these holidays in one form or another.

Now with so many holiday occasions comes lots of eating and that is where most people drop the ball on reaching their goal of losing body fat or re shaping their body. It is no easy task to do because you must make a commitment that takes more dedication than your relationship or marriage.

Your body is the best computer in the world and works 24 hours, 7 days a week. Your body does not care what you used to do ten years ago or even last year. Your body is only concerned with what you did for it yesterday and today.

I’m sure a lot of you remember when the second Terminator movie came out with Arnold Schwenegger and Linda Hamilton. That one movie drove my personal training business up about 25% simply because every woman wanted to look like Linda Hamilton and every man wanted to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. My clients were adamant about achieving those goals.

So I conducted a little experiment I took 12 of my clients and set them up on nutrition plans to achieve the goals they wanted. Keep in mind that I knew the trainer in Hollywood California who trained Linda Hamilton for her role in the movie. I knew what he had her eat for 12 weeks to prepare for her “ripped” appearance.

The experiment was to last for 12 weeks and basically they would be eating the same way a bodybuilder would in preparing for a competition. 2 out of 12 people made it the entire 12 weeks, both were men. 7 people dropped out after the fourth week another 3 after the 6th week.

All 12 people got results, the results varied according to how strict they were and the amount of time they put in. However, I wanted them to experience what it takes to lose the body fat or re-shape their body.

People found out that life gets in the way of your nutritional goal and you either give in or you do not, it is that simple. If you have a bad day at work and you know your next meal should be a chicken breast but your boss made you upset and now you are going to eat a Big Mac and fries instead. Perhaps you have to go out to dinner with clients or friends and you know you should be eating fish and vegetables and drinking water. However, you end up with conch fritters for the appetizer, fish and vegetables, 3 glasses of wine and a key lime pie for dessert.

The body lives by the motto of the Janet Jackson song “What have you done for me lately”.
People had drastic changes and started wearing jeans they had not worn in many years, ladies started seeing drops in the dress sizes and guys wanted to wear tight shirts when they went out. They had all experience some type of positive result and now it was up to them to keep their newfound shape.

The hard part is the constant maintenance program one must have. Everyone that is in great shape will tell you that the management part is the hardest to adhere to. No matter what kind of shape you are in to maintain that shape you must be aware of what you are eating or how your clothes are fitting you.

After you reach the point where you are satisfied then if you notice your blouse or jeans are starting to bulge a little then get back on track with the exercise & nutrition plan that got you in that blouse or jeans for a couple weeks. When your clothes start to fit again then enjoy a little more of the foods that you love. Use everything in moderation and you can’t go wrong. Remember, excess creates excess.

7 Principles of the Samurai

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

Hello Everyone, after watching the Movie “The Last Samurai”, I read the principles of the ancient art. I believe that if everyone practiced these principles more our World Community would be a better place.

7 Principles of the Samurai  (Bushido)

Honesty and Justice  (GI)
Be acutely honest throughout your dealings with all people.  Believe in justice, not from other people but from yourself.  To the true Samurai there are no shades of gray in the question of honesty and justice.  There is only right and wrong.

Polite Courtesy  (REI)
Samurai have no reason to be cruel.  They do not need to prove their strength.  A Samurai is courteous even to his enemies.  Without this outward show of respect we are nothing more than animals.  A Samurai is not only respected for his strength in battle but also by dealing with other men.  The true strength of a Samurai becomes apparent during difficult times.

Heroic Courage  (YU)
Rise up above the masses of people who are afraid to act.  Hiding like a turtle in a shell is not living at all.   A Samurai must have heroic courage.  It is absolutely risky.  It is dangerous.  It is living life completely, fully, wonderfully.  Heroic courage is not blind.  It is intelligent and strong.

Honor   (MEIYO)
A true Samurai has only one judge of honor, and this is himself.  Decisions you make and how these decisions are carried out are a reflection of whom you truly are.  You cannot hide from yourself.

Compassion   (JIN)
Through intense training the Samurai becomes quick and strong.  He is not as other men.  He develops a power that must be used for the good of all.  He has compassion.  He helps his fellow man at every opportunity.  If an opportunity does not arise, he goes out of his way to find one.

Complete Sincerity   (MAKOTO)
When a Samurai has said he would perform an action, it is as good as done.  Nothing will stop him from completing what he has said he would do.  He does not have to give his word.  He does not have to promise.  Speaking and doing are the same action.

Duty and Loyalty   (CHU)
For the Samurai, having done some thing or said some thing, he knows he owns that thing.  He is responsible for it, and all the consequences that follow.  A Samurai is immensely loyal to those in his care.  To those he is responsible for, he remains fiercely true.

Quote of the Day
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.
George Orwell
English essayist, novelist, & satirist (1903 - 1950)
Hello Everyone!

Firstly, let me congratulate all of you who trained for the July 4th Douatholon and competed in the race.
Some finished faster than others but the most important fact is that you all accomplished something new to add to your life experience. Whether you continue or not is solely your decision.
Congratulations to: Beth Buckley, Richard Compton, Theresea Hahn. Mario Rubio, Rob Fenwick, David Wilke, Michelle S., and K.C! Great job people.

If anyone is interested to see pictures from the race of these people just go to “multirace.com”, then click duoatholon series, then event results, name or category as there are various; Female First Timers, Clydesdale’s, Male 30-34, 35-39,etc.

Now that you have had a taste of the Duoatholon time to move onto to the Triathlon, there are several races coming up and we will start training for them soon. You may not want to do the entire triathlon and therefore I will be assembling relay teams for a a couple of races. The relay teams can be 2 or 3 people. One person will swim, one will bike and one will run or those segments can be divided by two people.

The Miami Man Triatholon has just added two more catergories by popular demand for duoatholons.
They have decided to add a duathlon to the Miami Man 1/2 Iron and International Triathlons.  The distances will be as follows:
1/2 Iron:  1 mile run, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run
International:  1 mile run, 22 mile bike, 6.5 mile run

PICK YOUR CHALLENGE!     I will be entering the 1/2 Iron Duoatholon. Our group training will continue and soon we will have our swimming instructors on board.

The ALIBootcamp Weblog will be up and running very soon, stay tuned…

Yours in Health,
